Squatting

Isn't Vern just the cutest little kid. Ok, so I am biased. This is baby picture of Vern. Even to the very last day before he went into the hospital and passed away, Vern would sit in this peculiar squat. Take a look. It is natural and comfortable for Vern to sit in this position. He would always sit like this to look at our fish, and could stay comfortably in this position for hours. When I squat, my knees pop and moan and I usually loose my balance. Vern could sit and stand into this position without any trouble and did not loose his balance.

One knee is not higher than the other knee. Both legs are bent at the same time with an even distribution of weight and then Vern would just simply sit in the squatting position, and then he would just as simply stand up by straightening both legs at the same time.

I have never, ever seen anyone else sit in the same manner.

Vern is a little man in the picture above. It is amazing how all things are connected. At this young age he would try to jump from the second story with an umbrella for a parachute. Later in the military, he would be jumping with a parachute into trees, in the night, and once out of a plane above 10,000 feet.

But in his childhood, he lived in a tough neighborhood, and was small in stature. The boys from school would pick a fight with him on the way to school, at recess, at lunch, and on the way home. If he fought back, he was punished at home. He soon learned that his mother and father packed a bigger punch than his classmates.

There were a series of factors that would shape his life and make him into the tough person he became. Tough childhood, followed by a tough military life, followed by coming home from the Vietnam War. I'll never know how he kept that great sense of humor and that broad wonderful smile.
